I don't have Sisterlocks anymore but I don't have the "creamy crack" in my hair either. I guess I'll keep the blog up a little while longer. It's amazing how many people have hit me up and said they have or are considering cutting their locs. I just hope no one is making hasty decisions!!! I miss my locs at times but I'm loving the new do...and color!!!

2009 has arrived and I must say I have a had a good year so far:-) 2008 was good also; however, my Sisterlocks and I were having an ongoing battle. After months and months of contemplating my next move I decided to cut them out. Luckily, I did not have to cut a lot of my hair and I was able to keep some length. So 2 days of my boo and I conditioning, washing, picking, and cutting I was able to put a comb to my scalp! I am going to miss the Sisterlock family but it was a nice journey. And of course I'm still NATURAL! Take a look at the new do!

You all know I cut my hair a few months ago. Well for some reason my hair grows like weeds in the warm months. I was so frustrated with it the other day I grabbed the scissors and began cutting it myself. I have been cutting it daily for the last week. I wanted my crop do back especially since it's hot as hell here in Atlanta. I don't want any hair on my neck. So check out the pics and tell me what you think. Please keep in mind this was the first time I've ever cut my own hair. The pic with me in the green is the final cut day...lol.

I haven't blogged in a while so I thought I would come and post some new pics. There is nothing new going on with the hair other than GROWTH! I tell you I can't keep it cute and short for 1 month before it starts growing like weeds.

I do want to give a shout-out to my good friend Victoria for hosting an absolutely fabulous gathering for our sistah's in Atlanta. It was a pleasure to see so many ladies turn out and look so great. My honey-do enjoyed himself as well!

Well after 3 years and 3 months I decided I wanted a new look with my Sisterlocks. I built up enough courage and decided to get them cut. I found a great natural hair stylist in the Metro Atlanta area and told her the looked I wanted. Sisterlocks are so versatile you can achieve almost any style. I love the new do!!!

What a wonderful time we had! We finally had our first gathering in Atlanta! I am so glad I was convinced to host this event. We had a wonderful time meeting each other and sharing different stories about our journey with Sisterlocks. It was also several ladies present that are interested in Sisterlocks...wonder if they're convinced yet;-) Well it was the first but definitely not the last! Thanks to all the ladies that came out!

Ms. Victoria and Ms. LaMonica both wear Sisterlocks. Victoria started her locs a few months ago and they are growing beautifully. And those that have followed my blog know that LaMonica was my inspiration for Sisterlocks! Her locs are indeed dynamic!!! My cousin Tony and friend Ericka both have traditional locs. I took this shot of them when I was home in Detroit. I always hear ignorant comments from people in my hometown saying "oh, that's a southern thing" well I'm hear to tell ya locs are all over the globe!

Yeah, I've been neglecting my page for awhile and I was called out...lol...thanks AYA:-) My hair is just continuing to grow, grow, grow, and I can't seem to do anything about it. I was thinking of cutting the length a bit but I am so curious to see how long it can get. Several people have contacted me about Sisterlocks so I guess they still look nice. I still love them and have no regrets at all about my choice to get them. I'm on my third consultant. I loved all my consultants but one retired, then I couldn't coordinate my schedule right to continue to go to my second one, and now I've found one very close to home!!!

I have been wearing my Sisterlocks pulled back off of my face for awhile. They are getting so long that it's hard to manage. Several friends and I had birthdays in March; therefore, I had a lot of parties to attend. I wore bantu knots at night to get the "curly do."

In April I visited my hometown of Detroit to kick it with my Dad for his birthday and to spend time with my family. Lately, I've been too tired to put the knots in at night so I've just been wearing them straight and pulled back. I'm still loving my Sisterlocks! I decided to pull out the digital yesterday and snap some shots just for fun. I am in need of a retightening on these pics but I got some really good shots of the length and color. It's amazing to me how my hair has transitioned over the last couple of years. I am having a great time watching it grow and mature!!! As you will see one side of my hair is falling completly different than the other....if it's not the color it's the curl...hahaha.

Someone actually asked me yesterday if my hair was "real"....I guess I should've directed them to my blog...lol.

Autumn....this is my favorite season

I just love autumn! Nature does its thing during this time of year (depending on where you live). The leaves are changing colors and the weather is perfect for cuddling, reading books by the fireplace, eating chili and drinking hot chocolate!

This year for Thanksgiving the entire family stayed in 6 cabins off of a lake on the border of S. Carolina/Georgia. It was absolutely beautiful. I had to get some shots of my hair with the leaves. My cousin took these and said "Ay, I think these would be good for your blog." Take a look....

I was scrolling through some pictures today and noticed how my hair has changed to the exact color it was before it was dyed in June. I'm still trying to decide whether or not I'm going to get it colored again this year. I want to try to some new colors but what is the point if it is going to revert to the same color. When someone asks "what color is your hair" do I tell them the color of the dye that was put in back in June??? They would probably look at me like I'm crazy when I say "mahogany".... What do you think, should I try out another color or keep it like it is? I really like the red!

I recently got my hair colored. Matter of fact it was in July right before the NYC trip. Well, as always the red has faded and now it is the dark blond looking color again. I don't know why this happens but it happens every time I get it colored. Regardless, I love the color and my Sisterlocks.

MY NEW YORK TRIP

I hate I didn't get the opportunity to travel to The Big Apple with the Sisterlock sistahs back in June but I was able to go on my own. It was such a nice trip and The Color Purple was awesome!!! There is so much diversity in that city. I saw people of all colors wearing traditional locks, lock extensions, and braids. I didn't see anyone wearing Sisterlocks though:-( I had several people ask me "are those Sisterlocks?" Finally, no one is asking "what is that?" or "are those braids?"

So I tried another new look for my Sisterlocks. You know I can only do so much with them because I'm not as talented as my fellow loc wearers. This look was something I stumbled upon...and I actually liked it. My locs are finally looking like locs and not "braids" as some have asked. But let me tell you, by the end of the day with this humidity in Atlanta my hair had gotten so thick up in the front that I had to move the scarf to the top of my hairline...lol.

I have been off of my blog for awhile. I noticed that it is almost a full-time job to keep up with a daily blog. After working all day I don’t want to see the computer when I get home.

Well, it is HOT as hell in the ATL now and I had to do something with all of these locs. It seems like they were everywhere…in my face, on my neck, in my eyes, etc. I’ve always had a complex about my FOREHEAD but it has been just too damn hot to worry about it. So I decided to try a simple ponytail. Wow, what a relief! Here are some of the responses I got from co-workers. “Krystl, you have such a nice face…why do you hide it? HUH? I don’t hide my face…it’s just that I have a head full of Sisterlocks ™. Then I heard “Krystl, you look 10 years younger.” So, now I’m thinking that I look 10 because when it’s down people say I look 20 and I’m a 30 year old grown woman. Anyway, here are some pics of the famous updo.

PAYING TRIBUTE

Saturday I decided to hang out at the Sweet Auburn Festival in Atlanta. There was no way I was about to walk down Auburn Ave without visiting the site of the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King. I've driven past her site several times since her passing but never stopped to pay tribute. I also stopped by to see the Civil Rights Walk of Fame and saw the footprints of the late Rosa Parks and other great icons. Where would we be right now without these two remarkable women? Would I be allowed to express myself and wear my Sisterlocks? Thank you Mrs. King and Mrs. Parks for making a difference!!! I know the both of you are in Heaven dancing with the Lord...kiss my mommy for me.

I TRIED

After reading several blogs and seeing so many styles I decided it was time for me to do something a little different. I never really styled my own hair so this was an experience I was looking forward to. Sooooo, I decided to do the bantu knots the other night to see what the "do" would look like in the morning. I liked it but after sleeping on it I was back to freestyling. I spritzed my locs with water and was on a roll with the knots. Well, so much for something different...it looks the same except for a little curl on the end.

This is how it all began. We had just met in Summer '03 in our Master's program. We instantly bonded and became good friends. I would just stare at her hair and imagine me rocking that same style. I was rocking the straight and layered look. I loved my hair in that particular style but it was too much to manage...especially in Hotlanta. On the hot and humid days it would just curl up and look like a big puff ball. So as time progressed I finally decided that I had to make a change to my hair. I was tired of being a slave to the pressing comb! I decided to get the Sisterlocks! So at the end of July 2004 I went for two consultations and in August it was a done deal. It was one of the best decisions I could have ever made and I owe it all to my friend, LaMonica. Girl, you wear them well and you are my Sisterlock Idol!

HIGH SCHOOL DAYS

It's been 12 Years since I graduated from high school (this is my senior pic). The times have really changed and it's only been 1 decade. What do we have in store for the next decade? As I take my daily commute to work every morning I notice how the young people have changed since my day. I just want to reach out to them and let them know that there is more to life than drugs and sex. Have you all noticed how many young girls are getting pregnant and using drugs these days. The rate of young African-American women with HIV is getting younger and younger. What is happening to our people? Are we about to become extinct? I know I can't save the world but I can have an impact on some young girl's life before it's too late. What are the parents doing? OH, I forgot that most of them are still trying to hang out and get their party on also.

If I see one more child walking to school in a T-shirt and shorts when it is only 50 degrees outside I'm going to scream. If I see one more pregnant girl waiting for the JUNIOR HIGH school bus to pick her up I going to scream. If I see another young person walking AWAY from the school during school hours I'm going to scream. If I hear about another Columbine plan I'm going to scream.

Anyway, enough of my venting....

I Lost a Loc

I know I've been away for awhile so I'm trying to get better at blogging. The other day as I was running my fingers through my locs one of them just happened to come on out. What is that all about? I saved it and will take it to my next retightening. I almost lost my mind seeing my hair in my hand like that. Has anyone else experienced this?

The First Grooming Pics

I had my first grooming a few days ago and I must say that I had a lot of hair on the floor when we were done. My loctician cut most from the top of my hair and really didn't mess with the ends too much. I kind of miss the "puffiness" of my hair. I do like that I can finally get my locks in a ponytail now.

I know we (Sisterlock wearers) often get questions about our hair. Today, I got the best one yet. Well, it wasn't necessarily the question but the response after I answered the question "Can I touch it?" Of course I said yes because I wanted her to see and feel the true essence of Sisterlocks! Well sister girl could not take her hands out of the hair and was instantly hooked. So I guess we'll be getting a new addition to our family soon:-) I knew it was an addiction!

Going through Withdrawals

Well, my supervisor just informed me that access to the internet is about to be revoked at the end of this week. What is a Sistah supposed to do now?!?! She said since our jobs do not require a lot of internet involvement I shouldn't be so saddened by the news. She even said I could use her computer since managers get to keep their access. I guess I'll be in her office reading and posting on Sisterlock blogs:-) She just doesn't understand...I just started this blog thing and I'm already addicted. Maybe they'll add that addiction to the list of diseases we treat at the agency. My primary drug of choice: Sisterlock blogging!

The FIRST grooming

Today is the day I go for my first grooming. I have been wearing my Sisterlocks for almost 2 years and have not had them groomed yet. How could I go so long?!?! I am so excited because all the strays will be cut and the ends will be trimmed. My loctician told me that the front of my hair with the straight ends will probably never lock up so we'll have to cut them.

30th Birthday Dinner

I've been wearing my locks for a year and a half. This has been one of the best experiences. I love it when people are in a state of awe when I tell them that it is ALL real!!! That is what Sisterlocks are about....your real and natural hair:-)

I have always had color in my hair. I was skeptical about getting my hair dyed since I have heard so many do's and don'ts with dying hair with Sisterlocks. I waited and decided to go to a natural hair care salon in Atlanta to get my hair dyed. Here are some pics that were taken the next day. Sisterlocked 7 months on these pictures....

I decided to start this journey because Atlanta is just TOO HOT! Seriously, I have a friend that wears the HECK out of some Sisterlocks. I would just sit and stare at her hair. I thought about it for a little over a year and finally made the decision to change my look. I never had relaxed hair so I was able to start with a pretty good length.
I don't particularly like these picture but I have to share them since this blog is about my hair and my locking journey. Boy was I tired...this is after 32 hours (2.5 days) of locking. I'm so glad my hair has matured because my head is so big...lol. This journey began on August 13, 2004. I have not looked back since.
